It’s a stewy kind of day – Day 10 WP Challenge

I stand in my kitchen, chopping onions, potatoes and everything that I need for my beef stew. Whenever I want to remember home, this is the meal I turn to. When I say home, most often I mean my parents home far far away.

Beef Stew was my comfort food, it had to be one my mum made. For some reason, this is what I turn to when I want any comfort of any sort. If I have a friend over and I want a meal without too much fuss and elaboration, this is what I turn to.

“My mum makes the best beef stew”, well I know a cliché line when I see it and that definitely is one. Let me explain why I say it and if I can justify that line.

Every single time my sister or I are away for a few days or weeks, months or years in my case, the one thing we ask our mum to make is Beef Stew. While I know my sister and I are probably biased towards her cooking, this always somehow seems to be the one thing we want, this is one thing where the taste seems to linger in us and despite so many attempts by us to try to recapture this dish, we have never found one that tasted better.

Even today, after years of living away from the place I still call home, this is my request.

On days my mum does make the beef stew, we all sit at the table, catching up on each others lives and somehow this is what seems to bring us together.

The last few weeks have been challenging for various reasons and I crave the comfort of something familiar. I have been running, riding my bike, going on hikes, baking and taking photographs as a way to distract myself from things.

I decide its time to stop and catch my breath, I invite a friend over for dinner and what better way to catch up with my friend if not over a big bowl of piping beef stew, just like mum makes.

About my random musings

I am originally from South East Asia and I moved to the US about 15 years ago to follow my heart. My heart has since been broken a few times, but I continue to be on journey of trying to mend it. I could talk about running, baking or writing in a small crowd, but put me in a room full of strangers and I will be the one standing in a corner people watching. When I am not writing or running, I would be in my kitchen, flour strewn all over the kitchen counters, music playing in the background and me just rolling and folding dough, excited about what my creation will turn out to be. Besides that I love passionately, when I love, I give it my all, not always a good thing, but that is who I am. I jump both feet in and sometimes I come out with regrets but having learnt a lesson. I believe everything happens for a reason and this is my place to share bits and pieces of my life, my adventures and sometimes misadventures. Hope you enjoy reading my stories as much I enjoy sharing them with you.
