The cold weather that winter brings provides the perfect reason to turn the oven on. It mostly helps because my old quaint apartment has no radiator in the kitchen, making it impossible on a cold day to be in there without the added warmth of the oven being on.
Warming the home with the scent of butter, sugar and chocolate wafting the air makes for a perfect day when hibernating at home.
Considering it was also Valentine’s Day, it was a wonderful opportunity for me to bake something chocolaty to share with the person(s) I love.
The last few days whenever I have been browsing the internet, there was no escaping seeing pictures of Chocolate Molten Lava Cake. Whenever I am at the gym I always have a magazine with me, because I hate staring at the screen on the treadmill and the picture staring back at me, was Molten Lava Cake. I head to the grocery store where they constantly have a cooking show on and I glance at the screen and you guessed it, its Molten Lava Cake again….there was no escaping the Lava Cake. I wake up dreaming of lava flowing and steam piping out of this cake, making it seem like the perfect dessert for a cold day.
My Valentine’s Day started off with a few hours at the gym, extra running just because I knew there was chocolate cake in my future, not just any chocolate cake either-a lava flowing cake.
My boy friend had planned to cook for me, but after having run errands and the usual Sunday routine, we decided to instead go someplace low key and have dinner. Plus mostly because I was starving and had no patience for whatever he was going to make. When I have hunger pangs, they are no ordinary hunger pangs, they are ‘hangry pangs’ so rest assured he knew going out was the better option.
However, once we got home, I decided to head straight to the kitchen and bake the Molten Lava Cake. Considering I never follow a recipe plus I have a love affair with pistachios, I decided to add pistachios to the flowing lava part of the cake.
I pulsed, whisked, stirred, baked and stood by the oven for this lava cake to be done. I had no patience to see the outcome of this cake that looked divine in every picture that I had seen.
I grabbed the hot piping ramekins and loosened it and put it on a plate and dug into the first bite waiting for the chocolate lava to flow. Alas, the lava did not flow as much as I expected and all my lava dreams were shattered within seconds.
At least I had some warmth from the oven and the smell of chocolate filling my apartment and hopefully I will no longer be haunted by wanting to make a Molten Lava Cake.
It’s worth the dream, I guess 🙂

I don’t cook/bake much so I don’t have many tales of disappointment, but I do have one amusing tale. A few years ago I was in a food/nutrition course where we’d cook something twice a week. Before Easter, the teacher thought it’d be nice for us to make pies. I was handed the recipe for lemon meringue and got to work. When I was making the lemony pie filling, I had to pour the eggs into the sugary lemon liquid which was on the heat, and somehow, the eggs were cooking as the two mixed. So I had these weird little chunks of scrambled egg in my pie filling. No one knew what to do, so I tried to use a strainer to get it out, but it wasn’t perfect. I didn’t end up eating my own pie, but my family politely tried it and said it wasn’t bad, but I will not be trying to make any more pies anytime soon.

Things going wrong is part of the adventure of baking. When you cook, most often you can fix things, but baking is so precise it is hard to do anything. I have had so many disasters in the kitchen and I get so upset, I don’t even look at it, I just dump it in the trash and walk away. I know exactly what you are talking about with your lemon meringue, it has happened to me too…. 🙂 Despite all the disappointments, baking it is still my stress reliever. I attempted to make a cake with oranges I had, but I forgot to spray the pan (such a rookie mistake) that it did not turn out as planned.

I had this elaborate plan to make a chocolate cardamom ganache on top of the orange cake…but alas…I had to eat pieces of broken cake. I don’t think I needed the extra chocolate anyway 😀

I was staring at more oranges today and was tempted to remake it but after working almost 10 hours today, I didn’t want to stand around baking cake. But I’ll share pictures when I make it.

I agree – I throw things together because I’m lazy to go to the store and they turn out really good. Unfortunately I’m never able to make it again the same way.

Your blog is very interesting! This post in particular resonates with me–sometimes things don’t turn out exactly how we imagine them. I’ve had angel food cake go flat on me and tres leches cake refuse to rise…so many things that didn’t end up looking great but still brought joy to the people I shared them with.
I enjoy how often your posts bring together baking and life. Cooking can give great perspective to things, whether it’s in the act of making it or sharing it with others. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Angel food cake going flat does not surprise me, it’s so sensitive and I’ve never tried a tres leche cake but I should try it.
